Welcome to Scolty Tower
Rising proudly above Banchory and Feughside, Scolty Tower has stood watch over the landscape for nearly two centuries. This striking landmark, steeped in history, has long been cherished by generations of locals and visitors alike.
Scolty Tower was built in December 1842 as a monument to General William Burnet, a distinguished soldier and respected local figure. The tower serves as both a tribute to his life of service and as a lasting symbol of community spirit.
From the summit of Scolty Hill, the tower commands striking panoramic views across the countryside, stretching over Banchory, Feughside and beyond. A well-used network of paths and trails winds across the hill and through the surrounding woodland, inviting walkers to explore the varied landscape that frames this much-loved landmark.
Community Renovation Efforts
In 1964, the tower’s masonry was restored through public subscription, reflecting the enduring affection the local community holds for this historic monument.
A further major restoration took place between 1990 and 1992, led by the Rotary Club of Banchory-Ternan with support from local schools, businesses, and organisations. The tower was officially reopened by King Charles, then the Prince of Wales, a proud milestone in Scolty’s continuing story.
In October 2025 essential repairs were carried out on the tower. This important work was made possible through funding from Feughside Community Council and Banchory Community Council, both supported by the Midhill Windfarm Fund, along with additional support from Marr Area.
